Test Preparation Materials We have a selection of study guides and preparation materials for English proficiency tests, such as TOEFL, IELTS or TOIEC. To see a listing of available materials, click on the test names above, or do a keyword search in the catalogue using the name of the test as your search word.

Rosetta Stone is an English language learning computer program that helps with listening, speaking, and understanding English. It has practice exercises for ESL students of all levels. Use at the library only.


One-on-One English Conversation Program

This program matches an English Language learner with an English Language speaker to practice conversation. 

  • You must be 18 years or older to apply
  • Each session lasts for 4 months (January – April; May – August; September – December)
  • The program is offered at 4 branches: Central, Beacock, Jalna, Masonville and Sherwood
  • Once you are matched you will be contacted by someone from the English Conversation Program with more information
  • Applications are kept on file for 1 year. Please re-apply to the program if you do not hear from us during this period.

Culture Works (Western University & King's College)
An ESL course for foreign students which allows direct entry into the University of Western Ontario upon completion. 

This website has a list of accredited ESL schools in the area.

Fanshawe College ESL
Fanshawe College offers year-round opportunities for students from around the world to learn English. Start dates every month. Prepare for standardized English testing. Enrol in the General Arts and Science Diploma after ESL. Consider homestay with a Canadian family.

Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC)
LINC is a community-based resource that helps adult immigrants improve their English. LINC ESL classes funded by the Government of Canada, offering classes through local agencies, school boards, and colleges.

London Language Institute
LLI specializes in ESL programming and preparing students for high school and post secondary studies. LLI also works with clients hoping to increase their English abilities for work opportunities in Canada and abroad. LLI also offers a TESOL certificate program and TOEFL preparation courses.

Adult Non-Credit Language Training
Adult Non–Credit Language Training (English-as-a-Second-Language and French-as-a-Second-Language) courses are funded by the Ontario Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration. They help adult immigrants and naturalized citizens improve their English. Classes are offered through school boards at various locations throughout the city.

TESL London
The local affiliate organization of TESL Ontario, the provincial assocation for ESL teachers. Includes links for both instructors and learners. An online magazine for learners of English.

London Cross Cultural Learner Centre
The Centre offers settlement counselling to new immigrants as well as employment counselling, social support, advocacy and assistance in accessing local medical, educational and social services, job search workshops, resettlement assistance and a volunteer matching program called the Host Program. Free English language classes are available to immigrants and refugees through the LINC program.


BBC Learning English
Materials for intermediate to advanced ESL learners from the BBC World Service. Uses simplified news stories to present English in context. Quizzes, videos and other interactive resources are available.

Dave's ESL Cafe
Self-described as "the Internet's meeting place for ESL/EFL students and teachers from around the world." This site contains quizzes for students, help with idioms and slang, teaching tips, discussion forums, web links and more.
Information and resources for immigrants to Ontario. Topics include recreation, employment, health, ESL and social services. There is a useful "Ontario by Region" section, helping you to find out more about a specific area or city.
