A New Book by Mike Holmes of "Holmes on Homes"

Welcome to London Public Libraries new Do It Yourself (DIY) Blog.

Over the coming few weeks check back with us for more tips, tricks, community program information and book reviews related to learning how to do things yourself. Our first DIY book to be reviewed is "Make it Right"  by Mike Holmes the host of the HGTV show Holmes on Homes

In the book, Mike Holmes takes you through different renovation projects for your home and explains the proper procedures that should be followed to avoid becoming the subject of one of his upcoming TV shows. Renovation projects explained include bathrooms, kitchens and basements. However the book doesn’t explain how to do these renovation projects step by step, rather it gives a broad overview of how much it will likely cost, how to find and hire a good contractor and what permits will be needed. As usual, throughout the book Mike espouses many of the same catchphrases and warnings that are a hallmark of his personality. Fans of the TV show will enjoy reading this book and seeing many of the photos taken from episodes. Those homeowners thinking of hiring a contractor to perform any renovation in their home would be wise to read about some of the dangers, problems and the challenges involved in keeping the project on budget and up to code.

Those embarking on a renovation project themselves might want to skim the book for ideas on materials, costs and techniques but will have to turn to other books and sources for more detailed information on how to plan, install, finish and perform the task that Mike describes in his book.
