Yes, you absolutely need a cover letter

You spent all morning wrestling with the latest version of word processing software to create and fine tune your résumé. Then you spent all afternoon searching the Internet for job postings or tracking down contact information for companies you’d like to apply to. Now you’re ready to grab the bull by the horns and get those résumés out!

You spent all morning wrestling with the latest version of word processing software to create and fine tune your résumé. Then you spent all afternoon searching the Internet for job postings or tracking down contact information for companies you’d like to apply to. Now you’re ready to grab the bull by the horns and get those résumés out!

Stopping now to write a cover letter will only slow you down, right? And it’s not like anyone actually reads the darn things – everything they need to know about you is in your résumé! It’s not really possible to write a customized cover letter for every employer you apply to anyway, right?

Think again.

First and foremost, a cover letter tells the employer what job you are applying for. Busy managers and human resource departments will not take the time to read your résumé and guess where you might fit in the company. Also, don’t underestimate the importance of showing the employer that you are willing to take the time to learn a bit about their operation and personalize your application to them. Nothing cools down a hot résumé faster than a cover letter addressed “To Whom It May Concern,” with a fill-in-the-blanks format for the company name. The formal request for an interview or in-person meeting is also delivered via the cover letter.
