London Women's Basketball Team: The Shamrocks

On April 7th, 1923, the Shamrocks, a women's basketball team from London, won their third straight Ontario championship, defeating Toronto 22 to 15 at the Armouries.  The Shamrocks advanced to play against the western champion, Edmonton Grads but lost both games.   The team was formed in 1919 and since most of the members were Irish, it seemed appropriate to call themselves the Shamrocks. The September 15th, 1988 issue of the London Free Press ran a 1922 team photo whose memvbers included Captain Carrie Blackwell, Pearl Blackwell, Charlotte Garrett, Edna Holland, Mary Lindsay, Kathleen McAvoy and Helen Woolley.
