He Shoots, He Scores!!

London Hockey black and white photo

Hockey excitement is nothing new for Londoners.

100 years ago, Londoners were celebrating the victories of the Western University hockey team.  The team had just won the London City League Championship and then the Northern League Championship by defeating the Wiarton Red Shirts 9-8.

Western travelled to Toronto to play the Berlin (now Kitchener) Flying Dutchmen,  the Ontario Hockey Association champions.  Berlin won 6-4.

Upon its return to London, the Western team received a hero's welcome with honking cars, college cheers and the skirl of Highland bagpipes.

On the back of the photo, "St. Georges Hockey Team". This would have been correct, as these boys would have played hockey together previosly, being graduates from St. Georges. Now in the photo shown as London Collegiate Institute Hockey Team. Graduates from Talbout Street Public School and St. Georges Public School would normaly attend London Collegiate Institute.
