Where Did You Sleep Last Night

Book cover Where Did you Sleep Last Night by Lynn Crosbie

If you were a teenager in the 1990s, Where Did You Sleep Last Night by Lynn Crosbie is a must read.  The title is Lead Belly's murder ballad that Nirvana ended their MTV Unplugged acoustic show with in November 1993, six months before Cobain's death.

The two narrators are heroin addicted teenagers discovering the intensity and sorrow of first love.  Evelyn Gray meets a fellow patient in the hospital whom she calls Sadness.

The book is filled with musical references as they tell their story using lyrics of their favourite bands. Their love affair is retold through a hazy stream of consciousness narration that will make you want to kick off your Doc Marten's, put on your best flannel shirt, light a few candles and read the book cover to cover.

Crosbie's a Canadian poet and novelist.  For more of her works, click here.
