Great Pianists on Piano Playing: Study talks with foremost virtuosos

book cover image

This is a reprint of James Francis Cooke's 1917 edition of collected essays on pianism written by composers and performers who were the musical luminaries of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

A sample of the thirty entries includes Distinctive Piano playing by Teresa Carreno,  The Training of the Virtuoso by Emil Sauer,  Important Details in Piano Study by Ferrucio Busoni,  and Essentials of Artistic Playing by Sergei Rachmaninoff.

The essays weren't meant to be a teaching method so the reader can choose to take the chapters in any order they wish.

The language of these historical figures may sound dated by today's writing standards but their message of how one might aspire to great muscianship is timeless as stated by Vladimir de Pachmann,  "This then is my life secret - work,  unending work.  I have no other secrets."
