From School Inspector to Senator

George William Ross, leader of the Liberal Opposition in Ontario's Legislative Assembly, was called to the Senate on January 15, 1907.  He was born near Nairn, Middlesex County and eventually attended Normal School in Toronto.  He was a school inspector for Lambton County, Petrolia and Strathroy before enrolling in law school at Albert University.  He was first elected M.P. for West Middlesex in 1872.  In November 1883, he was appointed the Minister of Education.  He was knighted on July 7, 1910 and died in Toronto on March 7, 1914.  Sir George Ross Secondary School was offiically opened in London on November 21, 1967.  In 2014-2015, Sir George Ross and Thames secondary schools merged to form B. Davison Secondary School.
