Heirloom Gardening

book cover image: heirloom plants

What exactly is heirloom gardening?  Thomas Etty and Lorraine Harrison have written Heirloom plants : a complete compedium of heritage vegetables, fruits, herbs & flowers to introduce home growers to interesting varities to tend and to help to save threatened and forgotten plants for future generations. As you can suspect from the word "heirloom" itself it is referring to some sort of old-time variety of plant (ie: not hybrid) but heirloom gardening is so much more, it is also responsible gardening.  Sign out the book and then join us at Central library on February 27 for Dr. Amy Turnbull's program What's the Fuss? Heirloom, Hybrid and GMO to learn more about these terms and also how you can improve and protect your garden.  Follow it all up with Ron Rossini's Master Gardener  program Can't Miss Successful Vegetable Gardening who will send you home with a wealth of knowledge and information.  Gardening is, afterall, just around the corner.
