True North Favourite: Places in Ontario

Places in Ontario : their name origins and history by Nick and Helma Mika

Sometime in the late 1990s, I attended the annual general meeting of the Canadian Friends (Quakers) Historical Society in Prince Edward County. My hometown of Norwich, Ontari had been settled by Quakers in 1810 so I had an interest in Quakers. I stayed at a bed and breakfast which had a bookstore attached to it. This was dangerous for me as I spent about $200 in used local books, many of which had been published by Mika, a small press publisher established in Belleville. Mika had published their first book in 1962 and by the time of the deaths of its founders, husband and wife team, Helma Mika in 1995 and Nick Mika in 1997, there were over 200 hundred published works. One of the best purchases for me was the first two volumes of a three-volume set entitled, Places in Ontario. I am still looking to buy volume three.
