Celebrate the Thames 2008

Why the Thames River?

Thames River Harris Park Painting by Kevin Bice Harris Park by Kevin Bice, copyright protected.

In the 21st century, recognizing that water is one of Life’s essential elements and cannot be taken for granted, we are coming to a renewed appreciation of the Thames River as both a precious and a fundamental resource that has defined and sustained our city. Recent decades have seen a renaissance of interest and concern for the river and along its lush banks London’s extensive network of parks and bike-paths has been developed. Londoners seem ready to embrace their river once again as the natural nexus of their community.

Read more about the Thames in this special River Series by the London Free Press.

About The River Project

As a diverse and creative group of 19 professional artists, we have the power to open the eyes of Londoners and those visiting London to the beauty and the rich history of one of Canada’s heritage rivers running right through the heart of this city.  We wish to focus on the relationship between the urban and the natural, on the interaction between Londoners and the river that has passed through here for much longer than there has been a city in this place. We wish to celebrate the presence of the river within the city. Perhaps, as a result, the public and political will to protect and enhance the river and its ecosystem will be strengthened.

winter at Blackfriers bridge by Kevin Bice Blackfrier's Bridge in Winter by Kevin Bice, copyright protected.

Our group is comprised of sixteen visual artists representing painting, sculptural installation, printmaking, stained glass, fibre art, photography and mixed media. As well, there are two writers who work in journalism, fiction and poetry. All of us are professional artists who have demonstrated an ongoing interest in landscape and its relationship to natural and human history. Our work is represented in many public and private collections throughout North America and Europe. Within the group, there is demonstrated expertise and experience in teaching, jurying, curating as well as a long record of work on community and government organizations.

 At the Library

London children gathered at all locations of the library and collaboratively painted scenes of the river through the seasons. See the River Thames through the eyes of our children.

Thames River Project: A Day in the Life

Beginning your Research

At the Library

First Steps

First, determine the location in which to search (local? Other county? Outside of Ontario?) and approximately the time period. Based on this, we can help you decide what kind of records are available and which might be most useful for you to begin with.

If unsure, start with the known, eg. grandfather’s name and approximate birth or death date and where he lived, then search a record that would take you one generation further back. For example, his birth registration or baptismal record would tell the names of both his parents.

Where to Look for Local Information

  • census indexes, cemetery transcriptions, marriages records (late 1700s to 1869 in book form)
  • church records – for some London and Middlesex County churches; also a few from other counties in Ontario. May include births, marriages, deaths, baptisms…
  • local indexes: for quite prominent people - analytics to books, genealogy index to periodical source; for anyone local – scrapbook indexes
  • early settlers project
  • newspapers – obituaries, marriages, death notices, births. The London Free Press Indexes 1849-1880 (obituaries, births, marriages), 1977-1995 (obituaries, births): London Advertiser 1864-1936 – some births/marriages/deaths have been extracted and indexed. Also other local newspapers, eg. Strathroy, Glencoe…
  • elected church histories and school histories
  • township histories, eg. London Township, West Nissouri Township have published histories with an incredible amount of information on families
  • historical atlases – 1870’s for most Ontario counties; show names of landowners of individual lots (available online). We also have earlier atlases for Middlesex (1862) and Elgin (1864)
  • wills of Middlesex County – we have the index for 1846 to 1980 (wills are at Ontario Archives) and have the actual wills on microfilm for some of the early 1800’s
  • Archives index (card file in Closed Stacks in the London Room) – for more information on local people and families

Where to Look for Ontario-wide Information

  • Census for all of Ontario – on microfilm; some have name indexes. First try the online versions of the Ontario censuses for 1871, 1881, 1901 and 1911.
  • Upper Canada Land Index – for early people, i.e. crown lands
  • Vital Statistics Index on microfilm: 1869 – 1911 (births)1869-1926 (marriages)1869-1936 (deaths).
These records are available on Ancestry Library*, except 2 years behind the microfilm version; Ancestry includes complete records, not just index.
  • Wesleyan Methodist Baptisms: for most counties in Ontario. Especially useful in the absence of birth registrations, since the information given is similar.
  • Catholic Record – 1878-1948
  • Browse the shelves in the London Room for the county you need; may find: birth/marriage/death extracts from local newspapers, county histories, church histories, gazetteers, various local indexes…

Engine 86

Engine 86Engine 86
London

Engine 86 was manufactured by the Canadian Locomotive Company in 1910. After 48 years of service with the Grand Trunk Railway and the Canadian National Railway, it was donated to the city in 1958, commemorating London’s 100 year history as a railway centre.

At the peak of operations in the 1940s, nearly 4,000 Londoners worked for the CNR, the CPR, and the London and Port Stanley Railway. Most of these workers were employed in the massive repair shops near the Western Fair Grounds.

By the 1960s, however, consolidation of operations in cities such as Toronto and the advent of diesel engines ended London’s role as a railway centre. Although many railway jobs were lost, General Motors of Canada later came to employ thousands of Londoners manufacturing diesel engines.9 This Mogul 2-6-0 locomotive was originally numbered GTR 1006, became CNR 908 in 1923, and 86 in 1952. In its last years, Engine 86 was used on a mixed passenger-freight line from Owen Sound to Palmerston.

After its donation to the city in 1958, it was necessary to move Engine 86 one mile from the CNR shops to Queen’s Park. This was achieved by using 60-foot sections of rail, which were moved from the rear to the front as the locomotive was pulled along with a winch. It was estimated that the move would take twelve hours. But the locomotive, once capable of travelling at 60 m.p.h., took four days to reach its destination. The engine became an attraction for children. The Public Utilities Commission disabled its bell after late-night ringing awakened the neighbourhood, and sealed its smoke stack after a youngster was found sitting in it.

Engine 86 was almost moved to St. Thomas in 1980, but public opposition to this plan has kept it here. G. M. Diesel of Canada and other local partners, restored Engine 86 during the years 1996-99.
