Interviews

Interview with Original Think

1.) How did you come up with your band name?

We decided to change our name from The Mars Monkeys, to Original Think because the band was heading in a different direction. Many of the members left, and our sound drastically changed. The initial band name was going to be Original Fink, a play on Derek Stocking’s uncle’s old band, Mathais Fink. However; fear of coming off as creepy caused us to change it to simply Original Think.

2.) What style of music does your band play?

We play mostly Alternative Rock focused on strong vocal harmonies and power instrumental parts.

3.) Do you write your own material?

Yes

4.) If so what influences that (books, movies, life etc)?

The influences for our songs vary, but are usually driven by life experiences.

5.) If you write, who writes most of your lyrics/music?

The original idea of the song is usually written by one person, however; the music is expanded on by the musicians who play each part, so it is hard to identify the writer of each song. The lyrics are usually written by Derek or sometimes Alvaro. All lyrics are open to changes and ideas that the band provides.

6.) What musical influences does your band have?

Our music is heavily influenced by Red Hot Chili Peppers and Jimi Hendrix, with slap bass and blues rock sounding solos.

7.) What other bands/music do you listen to?

We listen to Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, The Strokes, The Protomen, Raconteurs and Led Zeppelin.

8.) How long has your band been together

Under this name with these members, the band has been together for about one year.

9.) How/why did you get together?

The Mars Monkeys originally started off with 6 people who just wanting to play music. When the band wanted to get more serious, five people left leaving the bassist and guitarist. Shortly after, they picked up a new drummer.

10.) What ambitions do you have for your music and your band?

We are dreaming of making it somewhere in the musical industry, perferrably turning it into a career.

Alex Medos – Percussion

13.) What is the best gig your band has played so far?

Interview with Watch Me Jumpstart
Watch Me Jumpstart performed at Loud in the Garden of Readin' on July 16 and at the Westmount library on July 28.

How did you come up with your band name? Our Name actually comes from the name of a song by a band called "Guided By Voices".

What style of music does your band play? We play indie rock. It kind of sounds like it could be played by a Slacker Rock band from the early 90's.

Do you write your own material? Yes, we write 100% of our material.

If so what influences that (books, movies, life etc)? The music in general is influenced by hours of listening to music and all the time every band member spends sitting at the computer, which is probably way too much of the time.

If you write, who writes most of your lyrics/music? Colin writes all of the lyrics, music and most of the arrangements. The band as a whole adds to the arrangements.

What musical influences does your band have? The material is influenced heavily by late 80's and 90's bands like Pavement, Dinosaur Jr., Modest Mouse, Built to Spill and Guided by Voices.

What other bands/music do you listen to? Pavement, Sonic Youth, Radiohead, Dinosaur Jr., Neutral Milk Hotel, Elliott Smith, Interpol, Yo La Tengo The Offspring, Weezer, The All American Rejects, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rise Against, Foo Fighters Band of Horses, System of a Down, Nirvana

How long has your band been together? This current band has been together since December 2010 but Colin and Patrick have been in different bands together since late 2008.

How/why did you get together? The band came together after the dissolving of a few bands that Colin and Patrick had been in. These bands ran into problems because Colin and Patrick couldn't find members who were willing to be committed enough to attend practices constantly. The current line up has worked well because each member is completely committed to the 2 band practices each week.

What ambitions do you have for your music and your band? Our current goal is to finish writing about 8-12 songs by the summer and then record a full length CD on our own. We would also like to be playing a lot more gigs.

Who are the members of your band? Colin Graham, Patrick Nichol, Kiefer Knight, and Dan Engel.

What instruments/vocals do they play?

Colin- Guitar, Lead Vocals, and Songwriting

Patrick- Drums, and Back-Up vocals

Kiefer- Bass, and Back-Up vocals

Dan- Guitar

What is the best gig your band has played so far? Our best gig so far was a battle of the bands in February where we managed to have an audience of about 120 people cheering wildly.

Interview with Pandora's Sin

1.) How did you come up with your band name?

Well we had been searching for a really cool band name for a long time and knew that we wanted something kinda dark but with some meaning. We realized Greek mythology is a great place to find stuff like that and after some time we came up with Pandora’s Sin.

2.) What style of music does your band play? Mostly Hard rock and Metal, though we all have our loopholes.

3.) Do you write your own material? Yes, we just started to write stuff and it is a lot of fun!

4.) If so what influences that (books, movies, life etc)?

Well just other bands music and lyrics have a big impact on our writing and also just everyday life is great inspiration.

5.) If you write, who writes most of your lyrics/music?

We all write, but for our role in the band. Henry and Philip write most of the lyrics, Dylan, Philip and Henry write most of the guitar parts and Jake lays down the drum parts.

6.) What musical influences does your band have?

Well we are influenced by a lot of Metal bands particularly Metallica and Rage Against the Machine.

7.) What other bands/music do you listen to?

We like some classic rock bands such as Guns n’ Roses, Def Leppard, and Black Sabbath.

8.) How long has your band been together? Henry, Philip and Dylan have been in the band for about 10 months now and Jake has been in the band for about a month.

9.) How/why did you get together? Because we love to play, why else?

10.)What ambitions do you have for your music and your band?

We are heading into the studio in April to record and from there Henry is going to send the tapes to Slash ( Henry kinda knows Slash) and we’ll see from there. I think we are all hoping to get famous but there is a slim chance and we all have other ambitions so we’ll see where this takes us.
