Commonwealth Writers' Prize
An award for exceptional talent for contemporary fiction written in English.

Costa Book Awards
Formerly the Whitbread Book Awards, now sponsored by Costa, a UK coffee company, as part of their initiatives to support literacy. The award is for books first published in the UK or Ireland.

Golden Oak Award
The Golden Oak award, sponsored by the Ontario Library Association, is given annually to the book chosen by adult new readers as the best for adults in literacy programs at the beginning to intermediate reading level.

Governor General's Literary Award
Canada's most prestigious literary award, sponsored by the Canada Council for the Arts.

Lambda Literary Awards
The Lambda Literary Foundation is devoted to the promotion, preservation and publication of Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender literature. Their mission is the promotion of LGBT literacy in the widest possible sense.

Man Booker Prize
The top British award (known as "the Booker")for the best novel of the year written in English by a citizen of the Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland.

Finding Biographies at your Library

Books about individuals are placed in the Dewey numbers with other material on that subject. If you are looking for material on a specific person, search in the catalogue by subject, using the individual's name.

Some examples of individual biography are :

610-619 - Biographies of people in the medical sciences

780-789 - Biographies of musicians and composers

Dictionary of Canadian Biography Online
Includes biographies of persons who died between 1000 and 1930.  This includes Canadians and other people who played a role in Canadian affairs e.g. British officials serving in Canada.

heroines.ca : a Guide to Women in Canadian History
Includes individual and some group biographies of Canadian women in all fields of endeavour, as well as covering topics such as stamps, statues, historic sites, 'This month in Herstory' (significant dates), films and videos, etc.

In My Community

London Reads
Formerly known as "Western Reads", this program, sponsored by Alumni Western, is modeled after CBC Radio's "Canada Reads". It has been expanded to encourage participation by the whole London community to choose a book the whole city should read. 

London Reads closed its 2010 season with a celebration of this year's authors, book selections and panelists on Friday April 30. Authors Gil Adamson, author of The Outlander and Marina Endicott, author of Good to A Fault, were in attendance to discuss their books. Richard Wagamese, author of the third London Reads 2010 selection, Ragged Company, was not able to attend the event. Proceeds from this event benefit A Book For Every Child®.

Nos Trousses de littératie familiales sont des petites valises en plastique qui contiennent des livres et des jouets en anglais et en français, ou en anglais et une langue étrangère comme l’arabe, le farsi, le serbocroat, etc. Elles sont à l’intention des familles dont l’anglais est la langue seconde pour qu’elles puissent lire à l’enfant préscolaire en leur langue maternelle. Les trousses français/anglais se trouvent aux succursales suivantes: Cherryhill, Jalna, Sherwood, Masonville et Westmount.

L’abonnement de la bibliothèque municipal de London offre à votre famille un accès illimité à l'ensemble de la collection du domicile.
La bibliothèque TumbleBook a une sélection des livres d'histoires pour enfants préférés. De vieux favoris comme Caillou & Gilbert prennent vie de façon éducationnelle et interactive. Parmi les autres titres figurent Le gros monstre qui aimait trop lire, Léonardo le lionceau,et Alex, le petit joueur de hockey. Les enfants peuvent également y voir leurs contes préférés, notamment Les trois mousquetaires et Les voyages de Gulliver s'animer.

Poste Internet Français
A la bibliothèque centrale il y a un poste internet programmé en français et avec un clavier français où vous pouvez créer des documents, surfer, faire du courier électronique, etc.

Trouver des articles en ligne

Quand vous choisissez la base de données «CBCA (ProQuest)» vous pouvez choisir le français comme langue de l’interface. Entre les publications dans cette bases de données sont les titres suivants: l’Actualité, Châtelaine, la Presse canadienne, Bulletin des Agriculteurs, Infirmière canadienne, Education Canada, et autres. Les articles vous seront affichés en texte integral.

De meme avec «Ebsco Host» et «eLibrary», qui comptent entre leurs publications, Finance et investissement, SRC Radio, Fleurs, Plantes et Jardins, Direction informatique et Coup de Pouce.

Si vous voulez explorer des carriers, la base de données «Career Cruising» est disponible en français.

Large Print Books are designed for ease of reading. In addition to people with vision challenges, they are perfect for reading on the treadmill or learning to speed-read.

How many Large Print Books does my Library have?

Over 20,000 titles in paperback and hardcover and including bestsellers, popular fiction, mysteries, romance, westerns, classics, biographies and a variety of nonfiction!

How do I find them?

Large Print Books are gathered together in their own sections at each library. If you are looking for a specific title, search the catalogue by title. All Large Print Books have [large print] inserted following their titles. We’re happy to help you find them!
