Operatic by Kyo Maclear: Red Maple 2020 Nominee!

Operatic by Kyo Maclear Book Cover"Mr. K believes that everyone has a song.  He says that somewhere in the universe, there is the perfect tune for you". Charlie and her friends in 8C marvel at different genres of music as Mr. K sings and plays punk, emo, pop and opera tunes.  The assignment: each student needs to find a song for this moment in their lives, their final months in elementary school. Operatic, Kyo Maclear's first graphic novel, celebrates an inspiring music teacher, friendship and learning to growing into who you want to be. Maclear slips in some amazing music trivia - opera diva Maria Callas borrowed records from the public library!  Bryon Eggenschwiler's dramatic illustrations bring to life the feelings of characters past and present. What song feels like home to you?

Unicorns 101

cover image Unicorns 101 by Cale Atkinson is a fabulous faux textbook that offers a hilarious crash course in the most magical of creatures. You’ll have a hoot discovering juicy facts about unicorns - and witty wordplay abounds (“Scientific name: Betterthan horsicus”). On the syllabus is Diet & Digestion (unicorns have a refined palette, preferring “Peanut butter and pixie dust sandwiches”); and Social Behaviors (check out the “ancient ritual of the dance-off!”).  Atkinson’s penchant for creating dynamic, exuberant, fall-off-your-chair funny picture books is on colourful display here. Perfect for unicorn fans both in and out of the classroom - there's a cornucopia of classroom tie-in possibilities.
