Elgin County Surrogate Court Records
Volunteers at the Elgin County Library have indexed the Surrogate Court Records for the London District and Elgin County from 1800 to 1900. For the London District, all the available records were indexed. Elgin County was formed in 1853; thereafter only Elgin County residents appear in the index.
Henry Louis Gates, Jr. has been interested in his family's history since his father showed him a photograph of his great-great grandmother, an ex-slave named Jane Gates, when he was 10 years old. As an adult, this scholar traced the family trees of 19 African Americans, such as Oprah Winfrey, Morgan Freeman, Maya Angelou and Whoopi Goldberg, through U.S. history and back to Africa.

The Ivey Family London Room is a research facility for genealogy and local history located at the Central Library. It contains a wealth of secondary source materials on the city of London and the counties of Elgin, Middlesex, Norfolk and Oxford as well as original materials on the city of London and Middlesex County, such as:

- minutes
- maps
- photographs and other memorabilia
- selected municipal documents
The London Room collection does not circulate.
The London Room is open when the Central Library is open.
