Out of the past 7 seasons of American Idol, more than 40 contestants have released their own CDs.  Kelly Clarkson holds the crown for the most sold by any American Idol contestant, but Carrie Underwood is hot on her heels. Clay Aiken and Chris Daughtry are the next biggest selling artists, and they didn't even with their Idol competitions.   Just goes to show that fame (and 120 minutes per week of Prime Time television exposure) will get you everywhere.
