Library receives $65 000 donation from The Friends of the London Public Library

Carmen Sprovieri, President of Friends of the London Public Library, presents a cheque for $65,000 to Josh Morgan, Vice-Chair of the Library Board. This generous donation from Friends will be used to fund CD-ROM Early Literacy Stations for children and to continue the London Room Digitization Project.

The CD-ROM workstations in children’s areas of all library locations were originally purchased with money from Friends. Now they are providing the means to purchase new computer stations: an English and bilingual one for the new North London branch, and 11 more to replace aging ones at other library branches. The computer work stations have over 40 educational software programs for children aged 2 to 10 and were used 60,000 times in 2009.

The second portion of the donation will be used to continue the London Room Digitization project that was started in the fall of 2009 with funding from Friends. Historical photos and documents from the London Room collection have been digitized and catalogued, and can now be searched and accessed electronically. There have been over 1200 visits to The London Public Library Image Gallery made by people from around the world between January and April 2010.
