My favourite children's book of 2018 is ...

book cover ...a picture book by David Elliott called In The Past where poetry meets paleontology.  There are 20 poems for 21 prehistoric creatures, from trilobite to mammuthus, spanning 500 million years of evolution, more or less.  Matthew Trueman's illustrations make gruesome gorgeous.  You will recognize the better-known Tyrannosaurus rex ("Rest in peace, Old Meat-Eater"), but maybe not the Meganeura ("the giant dragonfly!").  I wouldn't want to meet Yutyrannus in a dark alley and Dunkleosteus is absolutely terrifying!  And you think sharks are scary?  Check out Megalodon!
