My favourite children's novels of 2018 are ...

Middle grade fiction was on fire this year! Here are my top picks for "Best of 2018":

book cover imageInkling by Kenneth Oppel, with illustrations by Sydney Smith - Bursting with creativity, a rogue inkblot comes to life, and this novel explores what getting unstuck means in so many ways.

book cover imageNo Fixed Address by Susin Nielsen - Nielsen's brilliant blend of heart, humour and hope, and a gnomelike protector named Mel, are on excellent display here.

book cover imageEbb and Flow by Heather Smith - After a "rotten bad year", 11-year-old Jett is sent to stay with his grandmother in  Newfoundland for the summer, and this compelling, authentic novel explores guilt, remorse, and ultimately, forgiveness.

book cover imageSweep by Jonathan Auxier - This story of Nan Sparrow and her golem Charlie has so many memorable lines:  "We save ourselves by saving others."

book cover imageThe Journey of Little Charlie by Christopher Paul Curtis - Master storyteller Christopher Paul Curtis has crafted an unassuming, inconspicuous hero whose bravery in challenging and confronting injustice is what we should all aspire to.
