We make Summer Reading Fun!

LOL laugh out loud logo with smiley face oReading over the summer has great benefits for children. They don't lose skills they learned over the school year so they are ready for a successful start at the new school year in September  AND they are reading books they are interested in which helps to foster a lifelong love of reading.  This year's TD Summer Reading Club, "Laugh Out Loud", continues our great tradition of connecting children with reading through the summer months. Last  year, over 6000 children signed up in London.

I've heard about it but I'm not sure exactly what it is?

Children sign up at any library location beginning this Saturday, June 21. Each time they visit the library during playing times though the summer, they tell us about or hand in a basic activity sheet (the young ones love to draw pictures!) about a book they've read. Then they roll the dice and move "their" piece on a playing board. The spot they land on guides them to choose a certain kind of book - maybe a mystery or a book with red on the cover. They also win a prize each time they play the game. Kids love choosing their prizes! In addition, children are entered into draws for weekly prizes, such as swimming pool passes and toys. The game can be played until August 16.

We're pretty busy this summer. I'm not sure we can commit to one more activity.

We know summer is packed full for families and that you may be away for a few weeks on vacation. That's why we keep the summer reading club simple. When you sign up, you do not have to commit to being at the library at 1 specific time each week - or even to come every week. Our playing times are flexible so you have  many choices for choosing a time to drop by that fits with your life any given week. Obviously, the more times your child plays the game, the more books they are reading and that is a win-win situation.

Prizes each time? How much does it cost to sign up?

It's free.

My child struggles with reading. Does the library provide any assistance for children who need some extra help and encouragement?

We have Book Buddies for children ages 5 - 11 who want to practice their reading with a buddy and Summer R.E.A.D. for children ages 7-12 who need one-on-one help. You can find more information here.

How much do Book Buddies and Summer R.E.A.D. cost?

It's free.

Sounds like the library is the place to be this summer for children.

It sure is! And we didn't even tell you about all the other fun and free programs happening at our locations. See all the children's programs here.
We are looking forward to an enjoyable summer with you and your family.
