Splash! Celebrate Summer: TD Summer Reading Club 2011

Summer is over and so is this year’s TD Summer Reading Club - - Splash! Celebrate Summer. We had lots of fun playing our Splash! Game Board with the 5,752 kids who signed up this year. All those who joined received a poster, 9 stickers, a bilingual activity booklet, a “Splash” wallet for their library cards, and a free pass to the Western Fair.

During the 8-week program, kids visited the Library and read over 20,000 books. There were weekly draw prizes, book reports, and crafts which added to the fun. We also took the Libro Library Road Show to many areas of the City to give children a chance to participate who couldn’t easily make it into a neighbourhood Library location.

An exciting addition this year was a partnership with ReForest London to provide an extra incentive and reward to children registered in the program. For every 25 books read, ReForest London pledged to plant 1 tree. We met and exceeded our goal of reading 20,000 books. As a result, ReForest London will plant over 814 trees!

The tree planting will happen on two Saturdays: October 8 and October 22. Please join other readers and their families as we plant hundreds of trees. You can find more information about these events at: http://www.reforestlondon.ca

We look forward to another great summer next year and hope you will join us for the TD Summer Reading Club 2012.

Little White Rabbit - by Kevin Henkes

Book Cover ImageAs he hops along, an imaginative little rabbit wonders what it would be like to be as green as grass, as tall as a fir tree, as still as a rock, or to be able to flutter through the air like a butterfly.  This delightful picture book makes a great spring read.

Operation Yes - by Sara Holmes

Book Cover ImageThe kids in Miss Loupe's sixth-grade class (on a North Carolina military base) can tell right away that she is unusual. Honestly, have you ever had a teacher bring a big, ugly couch into a classroom...and start talking to it?!? But once they get to know her and learn a little bit about improvisational theater in the process, they can't imagine having any other teacher. Later, when Miss Loupe's brother (a soldier) goes missing, she breaks down--and the class bands together to show their support.
