Give a Child the Gift of Literacy: Be a R.E.A.D. Volunteer

The R.E.A.D. (Reading for Enjoyment And Development) program provides one-on-one free tutoring for children between the ages of 7 and 12 years needing assistance with basic literacy skills. Tutoring is provided by volunteers.

Children who do not learn how to read well are more likely to drop out of school, have limited employment opportunities, and live in poverty later in life. Those children who experience difficulty in reading often develop attention problems, poor motivation and social skills, suffer from withdrawal and exhibit low self-esteem. Despite excellent curriculums, teachers and schools, large classes prevent teachers the opportunity to work individually with students to improve their literacy skills. Many parents, some with their own reading challenges, may be too busy with other commitments to spend sufficient time to improve the literacy skills of their children. Newcomer parents may not have the linguistic skills necessary to supplement the English language instruction of their children.

If you are passionate about literacy, are used to working with children and making reading fun, are sensitive to the needs of children facing barriers to literacy and are able to make a one hour a week committment from October through May then this experience is for you. The program is currently available at Crouch, East London, Jalna and Sherwood libraries. For more information about the program, contact the Literacy Facilitator at 519-521-5921.  For information on volunteering, contact Volunteer Services at 519-661-2300.
