Beyond Work

book cover imageEnjoying a successful retirement goes beyond financial planning is the message of Beyond Work, a new book by Bill Roiter, that focuses on guiding people who have been successful and accomplished in their working lives to enjoying similar achievement in their retirement life. He discusses the three eras of adulthood and explores the choices we make at each stage. As we move into "The New Adulthood" (55 - 85+),  we "move away from pursuing goals to finding meaning".  In addition to financial planning, the other three domains people should reflect upon are the physical, the social and the personal domains. This is an interesting read interspersed with many real-life examples and grounded in sociological and psychological theory. Appendices including a  typical budget categories for help planning your budget, good questions to ask of a prospective financial advisor, things to consider when seeing a new physician and a social self-assessment tool. The author is a psychologist with an executive coaching practice who has owned and sold two businesses, worked as a vice-president for sales and marketing of a publicly-traded company and taught at Harvard University. At first glance, I had expected a light treatment of the subject but I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this book!
