I am my Family

Chilean/Canadian photographer Rafael Goldchain whose parents immigrated to Chile before the start of the Second World War, describes his family history as one "defined by exile". Some of his Polish-Jewish ancestors left for North and South America before the War. However, most of his family that  stayed in Europe perished in the Holocaust and much of his family's memorabilia and history, especially family photographs were lost to him.

When his son was born he became increasingly interested in his own personal history and realized that he did not know much about his family's past.

He began collecting facts and stories about his extended family with little surviving information to work with. Soon he came to the realization that it was his duty as an act of remembrance to ensure that the lives of his ancestors were not forgotten. As a result, he has created an unusual, yet moving fictional family photo album from the 19th century on by transforming himself -with the help of elaborate research, make-up, costumes and digital retouching -into his own ancestors.
