In Search of our Roots

book cover imageHenry Louis Gates, Jr. has been interested in his family's history since his father showed him a photograph of his great-great grandmother, an ex-slave named Jane Gates, when he was 10 years old. As an adult, this scholar traced the family trees of 19 African Americans, such as Oprah Winfrey, Morgan Freeman, Maya Angelou and Whoopi Goldberg, through U.S. history and back to Africa.

If you missed these stories on the PBS series, pick up the book In Search of Our Roots. It's an intriguing foray into the challenges of searching for one's family history when that history includes slavery and the corresponding family fractures and name changes that resulted.

Genealogy lovers will also enjoy watching the videos on "Who do you think you are?", a similar series featured on CBC which traces the process of uncovering the family history of famous Canadians such as Don Cherry, Randy Bachmann and Chantal Kreviazuk.
