Not festive? There may be a reason.

Before diving under the covers and yelling "Humbug" this year, have a look at Dancing in the Streets: a history of collective joy.  Celebrated author Barbara Ehrenreich says modern society is starved for "the largely ignored and incommunicative thrill of being in a group united in joy and exaltation."

Prior to the Puritans, it seems, every third day was a church festival. Now, aside from rock concerts and the Stanley Cup, we have only Christmas to look forward to, which may explain why we start revving up our yuletide engines in November.
