How to Differentiate Yourself when Applying for a Job?

More and more, employers are using techniques that allow them to easily screen applicants for specific credentials, whether online using the keywords detectors or the quick 30 seconds scanning for paper resumes. Therefore, your resume should be done professionally and it should contain the information that will differentiate you from others.

So many people make basic mistakes that you can avoid by checking your resume and making sure that it contains what the specific job /company is asking for. Know yourself, skills and achievements and make sure the filters pick up your resume to the top of The Pile by using the right attention-grabbing key words, descriptions, action verbs etc.

The inside work of the resume preparation is the most important one so:

  1. Watch for the basics (spelling, content, appearence)
  2. Differentiate yourself (customize each resume)
  3. Respond to the Ad's specific requirements

It's not easy to locate your own mistakes so seek help from a professional career practitioner. The london public library offer you free help at any one of its six Employment Resource Centres where you can ask a facilitator to proofread your resume, help you with the formatting, recommend a book or even refer you to one of the great employment agencies.

As of July 7, 2012  all Employment Resource Centres closed at London Public Library. We continue to help with information and tools to assist your search for work. Find out more.
