Identity theft: how to prevent it

Watch out. Every year, thousands of people are victims of identity theft. While recent developments in telecommunications make it easier for companies and consumers to reach each other, they also mean your personal information can be scattered more widely, making life easier for criminals.

How bad can it get? Your personal ID might be used to open credit card and bank accounts, redirect mail, establish cell phone service, rent cars, equipment, or accommodation, and even secure employment. And you could be left with the bills.
