The Railway Children: on track for the holidays

Which is the best movie for the holidays not about Christmas? One contender has to be The Railway Children (1970), a winning adaptation of Edith Nesbit's 1906 children's classic. Set in Edwardian Yorkshire, the scenery alone is worth the viewing. Add vintage trains, three plucky children lamenting the mysterious loss of their father (Iain Cuthbertson), comic touches from stationmaster Perks (Bernard Cribbens) and ladylike resourcefulness from Mother (Dinah Sheridan) and you're on track for a heart-warming journey. All aboard.

Note: Jenny Agutter, who played eldest daughter Bobby in the 1970 film, played Mother in the 2000 television version for ITV.
