The Things They Carried

I'm almost finished "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien. He is a Vietnam vet and wrote this novel based on real events that he experienced during the Vietnam war. At times the narrator (whose name is also Tim O'Brien) changes and the new voice retells the same event that was previously shared. This exercise brilliantly illustrates how war affects different people in different ways. Originally, each chapter was published as a short story but they work in novel form as well. The Things They Carried is a must read if you are a fan of war stories. However, I feel this novel is a must read even if you are not...... it's just a taste of the horrors such young men experienced during that war. If you have already read it, I would love your opinion.

Here is a brief quote from this book:
"In the end. . .a true war story is never about war. It's about sunlight. It's about the special way that dawn spreads out on a river when you know you must cross the river and march into the mountains and do things you are afraid to. It's about love and memory. It's about sorrow. It's about sisters who never write back and people who never listen."
