Ruffs and Toughs

No wonder Shakespeare had so many good characters. The Elizabethans were a mob of personalities. Noted author A.N. Wilson follows the story of the Virgin Queen, Elizabeth, of course; but also of Francis Drake, the privateer who defeated the Armada and managed to circumnavigate the globe. Then there were the political intriguers like William Cecil and Francis Walsingham. Court favourites like Leicester skated very close to the edge, and Essex even led a rebellion. There was the literary genius, Sir Philip Sidney and the playwright-spy Christopher Marlowe, just for good measure. And after Sir Walter Raleigh established the colony of Virginia, English was destined to become the language of the globe. With a cast like that, the Bard couldn't miss.
