419 Wins the Giller Prize
In a Gala event hosted in Toronto last night, Calgary authour Will Ferguson took home the Scotiabank Giller Prize for his literary thriller, 419.
The book, which takes its name from the Nigerian Criminal Code for Internet scams, beat out 4 other Shortlist contenders to take the $50,000 prize. Runner-ups received prizes of $5,000.
Dressed in a kilt donning his family colours, Ferguson accepted the award in a speech which he capped off by reaching into his sporran, removing a silver flask, and asking the room to join him in a toast "to the written word". Cultural as it was colourful, Ferguson also thanked his wife in Japanese.
