What's New for 2013!

Book CoverSince the world did not end on December 21st and we have another year ahead of us, what can we look forward to in terms of science in 2013? Well, according to Popular Science news, there is a giant mass of gas headed directly for the supermassive black hole at the centre of our galaxy…but have no fear, we don’t need to worry about blowing up or the world ending (again). All it will do is blast x-ray radiation into space in an incredible display of light and help scientists answer the question of how black holes grow. Another little tidbit of exciting science news is that an 11-year cycle of solar activity will peak in the Fall with about 75 sunspots where magnetic fields emerge from inside the sun. According to science journalist Taylor Kubota, when these fields twist and snap, they can send plasma hurtling toward Earth, causing geomagnetic storms that disrupt radio transmissions, knock out power, and produce auroras. Sounds like the world will continue to amaze us once again in 2013!
