Freedom and Skating

On May 7th, 1947, world figure skating champion, Barbara Ann Scott (1928-2012)  visited London and was given the freedom of the city by Mayor George Weninge.  After the ceremony she was swamped by young autograph seekers.   Barbara Ann was the youngest national junior champion at age 11 and was the only Canadian to have won the Olympic ladies' singles figure skating gold medal in 1948.   Barbara had a local connection in that her great great grandfather built a home in the 1880s on Lot 10, Concession 3, North Norwich Township, Oxford County.

P.S. Don't forget to check the schedule of activities happening at Skate Canada House, located at Covent Garden Market Square, during the World Skating Championships next week!
