Canada Reads: The Year of the Flood

the year of the flood

As some of you may have read, CBC's Canada Reads is back! And it just wouldn't be a Canadian battle of the books without something by Canadian icon Margaret Atwood. This year, her novel The Year of the Flood is one of the contenders.

The Year of the Flood is the second novel in the MaddAddam trilogy, following 2003's Oryx and Crake.  A long-predicted natural disaster has occurred, destroying most human life and altering Earth as we know it. The Year of the Flood follows the stories of two women who have survived the apocalypse. Ren, a young trapeze dancer, is locked inside a high end sex club. Toby, a homeopath and a cynic, has survived by barricading herself in a luxurious spa. The Year of the Flood weaves together Toby's and Ren's past and present stories, and brings in familiar characters that readers will remember from Oryx and Crake. It is a novel that is at times terrifying, violent, witty and hilarious. Fans of Atwood will notice the similarities between this novel and her classic dystopian novel The Handmaid's Tale.

The Year of the Flood will be defended by Stephen Lewis, a Canadian politician, broadcaster and activist.Lewis feels that the themes presented in the novel are increasingly relevant - he believes the health of the environment is one of the most important issues facing humanity today.

The third book in the trilogy, Maddaddam, was published last year - click here to find it at a branch near you!
