Canada Reads: Cockroach

The fourth book on our  Canada Reads journey is Coackroach by Rawi Hage. This dark comedy takes place over one cold winter month in Montreal's immigrant community. A thief’s unsuccessful suicide attempt has landed him in therapy. As he relates the story of his life to his well-intentioned but naive therapist, we learn about his childhood in a war torn country, his emigration to Canada, and his nighttime existence on the fringe of the upper echelons. He compares his nighttime life to that of a cockroach, living on the edge of society.

Cockroach was a finalist for the 2008 Scotiabank Giller prize, the Rogers Writers' Trust Fiction Prize, and the Governor General's Literacy Award. It also won the Paragraphe Hugh MacLennan Prize for fiction.

Cockroach will be defended by Samatha Bee, award-winning comic, actor and writer. She is a correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. Click here to learn more about why she chose to champion this brilliant tale.
