Songs of Remembrance
This November 11th will mark the centennial observance of the beginning of the First World War.
Music has always been at the forefront of the arts inspired by armed conflict.
Whether it's the patriotic fervor of songs such as Over There, Mademoiselle from Armentieres, When Belgium put the kibosh on the Kaiser, Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag or the reflective pathos in works like Edward Elgar's Cello concerto and the numerous settings of John MacRae's iconic poem In Flanders Fields music helps define the age it was created in and the events that inspired it.
The Library has a selection of music from the period of the Great War available here.
