The Musical Theatre of Stephen Schwartz from Godspell to Wicked and Beyond

book cover image

If you're a fan of musical theatre and have enoyed live performances or seen movie versions of The Prince of Egypt, Pocohontas, The Hunchback of NotreDame or the immensely popular Wicked you'll be familiar with  the name Stephen Schwartz.

He's no small talent. As a lyricist and composer Schwartz has collaborated with major musical figures such as Leonard Bernstein (Mass), Alan Menken (Pocohontas) and Charles Strouse (Rags) over a career spanning more than four decades.

Author Laird says that his book isn't a biography of Schwartz's life.  Instead he's concentrated on the lyrics and music written by his subject to determine "what musical traits in a theatrical song contribute to its effectiveness":  Laird is looking for what separates Schwartz from a Richard Rodgers, Stephen Sondheim or Andrew Lloyd Weber.

There's a lot of detail in the 455 pages but Laird's fluid writing style makes for easy reading.  Enjoy this new title on a gifted composer, lyricist and director.
