City of Thorns

book cover image: city of thorns

Ben Rawlence's new book City of Thorns : Nine lives in the world's largest refugee camp tells the story of nine of the half a million residents isolated and virtually trapped  in this inhospitable desert community.  It is a humanitarian crisis but to the Kenyan government it is a "nursery for terrorists".  Houses are made of mud and the residents survive on rations.   Reading this book will leave you speechless but you won't be wondering for long why the western world considers it a dangerous no-go area.  The book is very well researched and written with compassion and eloquence. It is an urgent human story and one that needs to be heard.
