Civil War Nurses

book cover image Mercy Street

Abraham Lincoln wasn't the only hero of the U.S. Civil War. Heroines of Mercy Street tells the true stories of nurses at Mansion House, the Virginia mansion turned war-time hospital and now the setting for the new PBS drama Mercy Street.

Mansion House was at the cutting edge of medicine, too. Dorothea Dix, Mary Phinney, Anne Reading and the other nurses made significant contributions in the advancement of care.
