Exit, Pursued By a Bear

exit, pursued by a bear

E.K. Johnston's Exit, Pursued By a Bear is a beautifully written, well crafted book that I didn't want to put down!

Hermione is a entering her senior year in high school. She is popular, has lots of friends and is a cheerleader - basically the queen of the school. She is looking forward to a year of fun spent with her best friend Polly and her boyfriend Leo, but all of that changes when Hermione is drugged and assaulted while away at cheer camp. When she returns to school, Hermoine is no longer the queen bee but is faced with whispers and stares, and she starts to question what her future holds.

E.K. Johnston writes about the sensitive subject of rape and the aftermath in a delicate but realistic way, and the language she uses is beautiful prose. I loved how the story centres on Hermione's strong friendship with Polly, rather than the assault.  Johnston is an Ontarian (she lives in Kitchener-Waterloo!) and so many of the places mentioned in the book will be familiar to readers. Overall, a great read that is ultimately heartwarming and uplifting.
