The "Miracle on Ice"

cover image: Of miracles and men

The newly released DVD Of miracles and men is your chance to watch one of the greatest games in sports history.  On a Friday evening in Lake Placid, a plucky band of American college students stunned the vaunted Soviet national team, 4-3 in the medal round of the 1980 Winter Olympic hockey competition.

The Soviets had won every Winter Olympic ice hockey tournament since 1960. Their players were well-seasoned "amateurs" who were employed by industrial firms or military organizations for the sole purpose of playing hockey.  In contrast, the Americans were a collection of amateur college students, most from the rival schools of University Minnesota and Boston University.

The USA was down by a goal entering the third period then scored two to win 4-3.  This "Miracle on Ice" opened the way for the USA team who then defeated Finland, in the final game of the tournament, to earn the USA the gold medal.       A game worth watching, or re-watching, to relive the exciting and stunning performances by the players on both teams.
