Reading Challenges to Start Your New Year Right!

It's a new year and you know what that means...New Year's Resolutions time! While many people set goals related to relationships or health or finance, why not try a book-related goal this year? A great way to widen your book horizon is to participate in a reading challenge! I've listed a few of my favourites below:

The Goodreads Reading Challenge is simple – read as many books as you can in 2017. All you need is a Goodreads account! Readers set the number of books they want to read and then make sure to log every book in Goodreads so it counts towards the total. You can compare with your friends too, to keep that competitive spirit going!

Book Riot’s Read Harder Challenge encourages readers to get outside their comfort zone and read books from authors, genres, and formats that wouldn’t otherwise try. Tasks like “Read a book written between 1900 and 1950” and “Read a book published by a micropress” inspire readers to get out there and try something new!

Popsugar’s Ultimate Reading Challenge is one of my personal favourites. This challenge has 40 tasks in total, and while it's certainly one of the longer challenges, the tasks are imaginative enough that it should appeal to any reading level or taste! My favourite is the first one: "Read a book recommended by a librarian"!

Guilty of buying books and then never cracking the covers? You're not alone! The Mount TBR Reading Challenge pushes readers to finally read books that they already own but haven't gotten around to reading. (TBR stands for To Be Read). Readers sign up for a particular challenge level (anywhere from 12 books to 150+) so the level of commitment is up to you!

There are many other challenges out there, to suit any reading taste or preference! So if you're looking to "read outside the box," challenge yourself in 2017! And if you're looking for something to read and aren't sure where to start, check out our Staff Picks for some great reading ideas!
