Literary Oscars 2017

a long way home

The Oscar nominations have been announced and this year there are lots of literary connections to the movies that have received nominations.

Lion – based on the book A Long Way Home, an incredible tale of a little boy who gets lost in a Calcutta train station at the age of five and ends up adopted by a family in Tasmania.

Hidden Figures – based on the book of the same name, this is the story of the unsung heroes of the NASA space program, a group of African American female mathematicians.

Arrival – a science fiction tale about aliens, linguistics and the notion of fate, this movie is based on the short story “Stories of Your Life” by Ted Chiang.

Fences – set in 1950’s Pittsburgh, this film was adapted from a play by August Wilson and is a story of race relations and family tensions.
