Diana Morita Cole - Echoes of Nikkei Dispersal

Join us on Tuesday, Aug. 22 at 7pm at Central Library for the program Echoes of Nikkei Dispersal.  Nikkei is a term describing Japanese immigrants and their descendants residing in a foreign country. In this presentation we will learn about Japanese Canadians, Japanese Americans and Japanese Latin Americans.

Diana Morita Cole, a Japanese Canadian, born in an internment camp in Idaho during World War II will present her new book titled Sideways: Memoir of a Misfit which chronicles her life and presents the struggles of a young girl to overcome the stigma of being a member of a despised group and features the lives of important cultural icons.

The first chapter of this book was published in The New Orphic Review and shortlisted in the Open-Season Competition of The Malahat Review creative non-fiction category for 2013. It was also nominated for the Pushcart Prize Anthology for 2015 and is a required reading at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Ernest Hekkanen, Editor-in-Chief of The New Orphic Review says “Sideways: Memoir of a Misfit acquaints us with what is uncomfortable in history, how people suffer and find resilience. This is a book full of fascinating personal insights.”

A clip of the documentary film, Hidden Internment: Story of Art Shibayama, produced by Peek Media in cooperation with the Japanese Peruvian Oral History Project, will be screened. The film exposes the kidnapping of 2,200 Japanese Latin Americans from their homes in South America and Central America and their imprisonment in the United States and discloses Shibayama’s three-decade struggle to gain the equivalent redress and apology that was granted to Japanese Americans and Japanese Canadians.
