In May 1940, the British Expeditionary Force was sent to help the French and Belgians hold back the hard-charging German army. Things didn't go as planned.

The BEF found themselves in mortal danger thanks to the collapse of the French army. Ill-equipped and under-trained, they nevertheless fought hard for three weeks. Julian Thompson recreates the action, from the misunderstandings between the generals to the terrors of the ordinary soldier.
