The Mistress of Nothing
7 June 2011 - 2:32pmRecently I picked up "The Mistress of Nothing" by Kate Pullinger. This novel, based on a true story was set mainly in Egypt during the mid-1800's. Lady Duff Gordon has contracted the dibilitating disease called tuberculosis and is forced to leave her family in England and move to the hot climate of Egypt in order to extend her life. With her comes her fiercely loyal lady's maid, Sally and together they make a new home in this foreign land. Told from Sally's perspective, the reader easily
What's your reading passion?
2 May 2011 - 8:07pmDo you read about your passion? I've mentioned before that I read mostly fiction but lately I've delved into reading about my own passion which is running. It really is wonderful to pick up a book that is about something you love. You can get some great advice and in my case

Sing You Home - Jodi Picoult
26 March 2011 - 3:44pmJodi Picoult does it again with "Sing You Home". Are you a Picoult fan? She's written some really popular titles like "Nineteen Minutes" and "My sister's Keeper". (actually all her titles are popular!) You may have seen the movie based on her book as well (My sister's Keeper). At any rate, Jodi Piccoult tends to write about very intense subjects like school shootings, cancer, abuse and so on. Sounds depressing I know however, she always includes positive

The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake
10 March 2011 - 10:36amI finished "The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake" over the weekend. I really liked it... but (yes a but!) there was a part of the story that really lost me because I felt it
She's baaaack!
25 February 2011 - 2:36pmYes, ladies and gentleman Alice Hoffman is back! She is one of my all time favourite authors. I remember when I discovered her years ago, I read everything and anything she wrote. I loved the magical quality (magical realism) she always included in her novels. I had never read anyone like her! However, her more recent work

The Things They Carried
15 February 2011 - 5:46pmI'm almost finished "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien. He is a Vietnam vet and wrote this novel based on real events that he experienced during the Vietnam war. At times the narrator (whose name is also Tim O'Brien) changes and the new voice retells the same event that was previously shared. This exercise brilliantly illustrates
