Waterloo Hotel

On January 11, 1847, Captain John "Waterloo" Smyth reopened his boarding house as the Waterloo Hotel on the west side of Richmond Street just north of York Street.  John Smyth, originally from England, was a soldier in the 95th Regiment and fought under Wellington at Waterloo.  He came to London in 1838 and was a pioneer in the volunteer movement and a captain of the first rifle company organized in the district.

190 years ago today on January 9th, 1827, the Quarter Sessions of the Peace for the London District were held in London for the first time at the temporary frame court house and gaol on the southwest corner of Dundas and Ridout streets

An Orthodox Christmas

The Orthodox Church in Canada will celebrate Christmas on January 7th according to the Gregorian calendar.  One hundred years ago today (January 6, 1917), prayers were held for the first time in the newly-opened Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Eastern Church on the southwest corner of Dreaney Avenue and Layard Street. That building is still standing today.
