My Listening Room

I am captivated by our new online audiobook service--I read lots and love to read, but there are many times when I play an audiobook CD and listen to a good story--on a long car ride, or when I need to settle in and finish knitting a sweater for my grandchild, or when I'm polishing the silver (once a year).

The launching pad...a good book's first sentence

One of the great pleasures of reading  a good novel is the anticipation of settling in, studying  the cover, turning the title page, reading the dedication, the title page, the quote if there is one, and then embarking on the journey.  I've learned to add another step to this process from a friend who facilitates my book club.  Last year, she suggested reading just the first sentence of a novel, then closing the book and lingering over that first sentence for a few days before moving ahead with the read.  I've been doing that for months now.

Festive events

It's easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle this time of year. Looking back on past holidays, the memories I cherish are not the ones of standing in long lineups at checkout counters or circling parking lots hoping for a spot to appear but rather the times when our family stopped rushing and slowed down to enjoy the season. We've planned many holiday events at your Library this December. Why not slow down and drop by?
