Privacy Policy Alerts
Recently, you may have received emails, alerts or notifications about privacy policy updates to some online services and platforms, including from the companies that provide our digital resources, like ebooks, magazines through RB Digtal and services like hoopla. These companies offer their services internationally and are affected by changes in the European Union. Each of these companies maintain their own Privacy Policies and Terms of Use, which you are asked to read and consent to before setting up your account and using their service. Many of them are updating their Privacy Policies and Terms of Use to reflect the changes that will occur in the European Union with The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) on May 25, 2018.
What does this mean for you? This means that if you use any of these resources, you will likely have to read and agree to the new Privacy Policy and Terms of Use.
Here are a few important changes that may be reflected:
- Consent – companies will no longer be able to use confusing wording in their terms and conditions. It must be as easy to withdraw consent as it is to accept it.
- Breach Notification – if there is a data breach, the company has 72 hours to notify customers.
- Right to Access – customers have the right to find out if the company is collecting personal data, where and for what purpose. Individuals have the right to request a copy of the data in an electronic format, free of charge.
- Right to be Forgotten – also known as Data Erasure, this is the right for a person to request that all data on them to be erased and for the data collector to stop further dissemination of this information.
Please be sure to read the new Policies before giving your consent.
